As part of The Sydney Fringe Festival, 2011 Hardware Gallery held the 5th annual Google exhibition.
Every year Hardware gallery get together a group of artists to accept an art mission: on the same day at the same time, every artist must google the same phrase – from a nominated page of results they all must select one website as their sole source of inspiration for… making an artwork.
This year’s phrase was “Uncanny Valley”. My inspired artwork for the event became “The Pied Piper of Dreams” pictured above.
The internet takes you to the world of the unknown. There is a certain lure about it and where it can take you – it’s a journey with a finite start, and unknown end. Hence the ‘lure of the pied piper’ came to mind. The Pied Piper’s music is hypnotic and intriguing, and offers a sense of escapism. There is also something unusual and perhaps dangerous about his presence, and yet this seems to add to his lure and uncanny appeal. So I ask in this artwork: Where will curiosity lure you, and what dreams will lure you today?
The earliest mention of the story of the Pied Piper was on the stained glass window of placed in the Church of Hamelin c 1300, and so the design is influenced by the angular forms of the stained glass from this period.
“Please your honours,” said he, “I’m able,
By means of a secret charm, to draw
All creatures living beneath the sun….”
– The Pied Piper Of Hamelin, Robert Browning
