I was extremely honoured in May 2011 to be invited by curator Adelinda Allegretti to be part on an International Artist residency in Varese with a group of artists from all around the world. Sponsored by Lindt, the event took us to Varese where the aim became to produce artwork on the grounds of AtaHotel Varese, the hotel which graciously sponsored our accommodation and food. It was a beautiful venue, and the location’s view of the mountains coupled with the beautiful weather made it a wonderful place to explore and create art.
I have to say that even more inspiring than the location, were the 25 other international artists, each unique in personality and artistic style. Creating art in a diverse group with different cultural influences, and varying sources of inspiration, made for an exciting and educational process of creation and I met some beautiful people along the way.
For me, the challenge of the residency was creating artworks in a short amount of time. For an artist predominately focused on oil painting, the challenge was to create a minimum of 4 artworks by the residency’s end (1 week time frame) ready for exhibition and sale, 2 of which would be chosen to donate to the Varese childrens hospital. I explored for the first time the use of fine acrylic paint on canvas, and what a great suprise to see the paint dry so quickly; blending colours came from the process of dry-brushing for me, and I was pleased to see it didn’t have a great effect on the outcome of my artworks. I do love oil paint at heart however, the smoothness, the wetness, the scent.
